The painting was originally purchased by Henry P. Richmond, Boston architect and amateur watercolorist. Henry Richmond, as a member of Guy Lowell Architects, designed the Fenway entrance to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and was a close friend of Edwin J. Hipkiss, curator of Decorative Arts at the museum. It is likely that Henry P. Richmond and Edwin J. Hipkiss knew Arthur Goodwin personally. The painting remained in the Richmond/Pierce family until the present, passing first to Mr. Richmond's daughter, Nancy Richmond Pierce, and then to he son, David Richmond Pierce.
