A Silver and Enamel Table Ornament, Attributed to Simon Grunwald, 19th Century.
Having Viennese control mark ca. 1866-1872. Decorated with enameled allegorical scenes and landscapes, with silver figural center of cherub riding a winged Hippocamp.
H: 6 5/8 W: 7 3/4 D: 6 in.
The Hippocamp has the head and forelegs of a horse, tail and forefins of a fish, and the wings of a bird. In myth, the winged Pegasus was the son of the sea-god Poseidon, and the fish-tailed Hippocampi were his aquatic steeds.
