José Gallegos y Arnosa was a prominent Spanish painter and sculptor associated with Preciosist Realism. Born in Jerez de la Frontera, he studied under Federico de Madrazo at Madrid's San Fernando Academy. Sponsored by winery owner Guillermo Garvey, Gallegos moved to Rome in 1880, remaining in Italy for most of his career. He won a gold medal at the 1891 Berlin International Exposition. He is best celebrated for his highly detailed, jewel-like paintings of church interiors, cardinals, clerical life, and vibrant Italian genre scenes.
