A Senufo Double Figural Fertility Staff, Early 20th Century,
The base topped by female figure carrying pot, with male figure upside down atop pot above female, indicating marriage, surmounted by Hornbill bird perched on male's feet with outstretched wings.
Hornbill bird with wings outstretched represents protection of their young. The long beak touching the protruding belly represents procreation.
H: 54 3/4 in (including stand)
Stand: H: 1 3/4 x 7 x 6 3/4 in.
H: 53 W: 4 3/4 D: 4 in.
This rare sculpture is symbolic on many levels for the Senufo and their belief system or Poro. Hornbills mate for life and share equal work of raising young, as do the Senufo. The Hornbill is also the mythological founder of the Senufo, and is associated with fertility and ancestor worship.
