4to. Half bound leather with red cloth boards. Gilt title "D. S. Foster." on cover. "Foster Bull Run 1862" gilt on spine. Raised spine. Marbled pastedown and flyleaves.

Asa Bird Gardiner (1839-1919) was appointed Judge Advocate of the newly formed Department of Law at west point in 1874-1878. Gardiner was appointed recorder of the commission review of the court-martial of Major General Fitz John Porter. Porter's court martial was over his actions in the second battle of Bull Run. fair to poor. Book is custom bound contemporaneous with the Commission's investigation. Maps have repairs and new paper backing in several cases. Some repairs include non-archival tape.Ink inscription on table of contents: "Official Copy: Asa Bird Gardiner Judge Advocate U.S. Army, Recorder."

Pencil inscriptions on some of the outside of the maps as annotations.
