Asa Bird Gardiner (1839-1919) was appointed Judge Advocate of the newly formed Department of Law at west point in 1874-1878. Gardiner was appointed recorder of the commission review of the court-martial of Major General Fitz John Porter. Porter's court martial was over his actions in the second battle of Bull Run.
