A West African Gizzi Penny, Circa Early 20th Century,
Gizzi pennies (also known as Kissi pennies) were smelted and hand-forged by native blacksmiths of West Africa (present day Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.) Formed of twisted, hammered iron, they were used interchangeably in transactions from the late 1880s until the late 1930s.

Gizzi pennies were believed to have souls and magical powers. If broken, they could be taken to a shaman who could repair it.
