An Indian Bronze Figure Of Ganesha, 20th Century,
A bronze statue of the Hindu god Ganesha, remover of obstacles.
The statue depicts a figure with an elephant head and four human arms. The elephant head has one tusk, with one depicted as cut off at the base; this symbolically represents retaining the good and throwing away the bad.
Ganeasha holds an axe - to cut attachments, rope - to pull the devotee to their highest good, and prayer beads. A cobra snake runs around Ganesha's belly, representing cosmic kundalini energy.
H: 30 x W: 19 x D: 11 in.
The weight is 105 lbs. Early 20th century and largely in excellent shape. Visible casting seam where figure casting is joined to pedestal casting. There is a faint patina, and there are a few small areas of repair in the following locations: on the base in the back, back left ankle, underside of back right leg, back left wrist, and back right head. Each of these areas is an inch or less in diameter and corresponds to places where the two figures who usually flank Ganesha in these statues would have connected with the central figure. Those two figures have been removed from this piece. All lots have imperfections or the effects of aging. Gray's Auctioneers shall have no responsibility for any errors or omissions.
