Saltzburg Archiepiscopatus Cum Ducatu Carinthiae, 1636,
By Gerard Mercator (1512-1594.) Hand-colored, engraved map of Saltzburg, Austria.

Gerard Mercator is one of the most famous cartographers of all time. He created and popularized a projection, called the Mercator projection, where all parallels and meridians are drawn at right angles to each other, with the distance between the parallels extending towards the poles.

Mercator also contributed to the field of cartography the term Atlas, first used to describe his collection of maps gathered into one volume.
