A Betsy Ross 13 Star Flag, by Rachel Albright Inscribed and Dated 1904.
Hand-sewn Silk ribbon flag with 13 hand embroidered stars in canton; inscribed as follows on hoist: First Flag made 1777 by Betsy Ross. This copy of the original Flag made in Oct. 1904 by Rachel Albright aged 92 years. Grand-daughter of Betsy Ross.
Mounted in glazed gilded frame.
Flag dimensions: H:10 1/2 x W: 19 3/4 in
H: 23 1/2 W: 14 1/2 in.
The story goes that Betsy Ross's Granddaughter, Rachel Wilson Albright began making little flags for tourists in the East Wing of Independence Hall in Philadelphia possibly around the centennial of 1876 but certainly by the end of the 19th century. Her daughter Mary Catherine and niece Sarah Wilson joined in the making of flags. Records indicate that the sale of these flags was in support of the American Flag House and Betsy Ross Memorial Association. Rachel Wilson Albright and her daughter are buried in Fort Madison, Iowa.
